In a significant development, the CBI on Saturday slapped charges of rape and murder charges against former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Sandip Ghosh, currently in judicial custody in a corruption case, an official of the probe agency said.

The agency also arrested Abhijit Mondal, the officer in charge of Tala Police Station, for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of an on-duty woman medic in the RG Kar Hospital, he said. The hospital is under the jurisdiction of Tala Police Station.

The central agency had applied before a court seeking the remand of Ghosh. The court has asked the jail authorities to produce him for CBI custody, the official added.

 The CBI on Saturday added rape and murder charge against former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, an agency official said.

An on-duty doctor was raped and murdered in state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

Ghosh is currently in judicial custody in a corruption case.

A policeman was also arrested in the rape and murder case, the official said.

The agitating doctors on Saturday evening confirmed they will attend a meeting at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s residence to resolve the RG Kar hospital impasse.

Responding to the mail by West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, the agitating doctors said they would attend the meeting and place their demands before the chief minister.

“We would attend the meeting with our representatives. We will place our five demands. We are going to the discussions with an open mind, but no one should be under the illusion that we will compromise on our demands,” an agitating doctor said.

Kolkata rape-murder case: “CM Mamata Banerjee herself came to the protest site and we are very happy about this. We are also very happy to know the way for communication and dialogue is open from both sides. We have sent a mail to the CM’s office to express our happiness and faith that she will agree to our five demands. We are also ready to have a discussion with her whenever she calls us,” says Arif Akhtar, one of the agitating doctors outside Swasthya Bhawan at Salt Lake in Kolkata.

Amid the continuing impasse, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday made a surprise visit to the site where the junior doctors were protesting, and assured them that she would look into their demands and take action if anyone was found guilty.

Addressing the protesting doctors amid chants of “we want justice” outside the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, Banerjee said she had been spending sleepless nights because the medics were agitating on the road amid rains and described her visit as the “last attempt” to resolve the crisis.

Banerjee assured the protesting doctors that she would not take any action against them because she did not believe in suppressing a democratic movement as “Bengal is not Uttar Pradesh”.
